The first set of after school hours bikeability sessions with Mr Fabio Spiteri has come to an end. All the 8 students have learnt how to ride a bike confidently thanks to the initiative that was spearheaded by the EkoSKola Committee. Thanks to Transport Malta and Nature Trust for sponsoring the bicycles and protective gear that were used during these sessions. Thanks also to the School Council who subsidized the fee for our students. Well done to all!

On Wednesday 28th of February we marked another milestone for our Green School Travel action plan. All the students in Year 5 and 6 were given a talk by Ms Cynthia Caruana, EkoSkola Coordinator, locally managed by Nature Trust FEE, regarding the advantages and disadvantages of e-bikes and road safety when riding a bike. They were also given the opportunity to go for a short ride on the e-bike to experience the thrill first hand.

Later, The Ekoskola committee members were given a talk on electric vehicles by Ing. Ronald Attard Pullicino, Senior Manager – Projects, Innovation & International Affairs, Land Transport Directorate Projects Unit, Transport Malta Office. They were also lucky enough to spend some time in the electric vehicle on display that was kindly provided by Transport Malta.

Parents and residents of Luqa were also invited to learn more about the benefits of electic vehicles and the grants available to purchase such vehicles.

The college principal, Dr Doreen Said Pace, the mayor of Luqa, Mr John Schembri and Ms Cynthia Fiteni on behalf of Transport Malta, were also present during the last part of the event.

Thanks to Transport Malta and  Ms Cynthia Caruana for this opportunity. We can be an active agent of change, so let’s change paths together.

Bike Lessons

Below are some photos of today’s fun activity:

We started off with the bike and scooter run in the streets around the school.

And then it was time for the actual fun run in which students from Year 2 to Year 6 took part.

On Monday 13th November 2023, during the annual Green Flag and Sustainable Mobility Awards ceremony at the Westin Dragunara St Julians, the school was awarded the Best Green School Travel Plan Award by HE the President of Malta Dr George Vella. The award was given for our current project in which we are promoting the use of bikes and scooters as means of transport to and from school. The award included a donation of €300 from Transport Malta. The money will be used to build a shed where the bicycles bought by the school can be stored and protected from the elements. Present to the ceremony were the Head of School, Mr Alexander Cassar, the Eko-Skola link person and Asst. Head Mr Stefano Farrugia, as well as the President and Vice-President of the Eko-Skola Committee, Cyan Abela (P6.1) and Zack Vassallo respectively (P5.1).

As part of this project, children in our school are given lessons in how to ride a bicycle. As a result, one of our students, Emily Testa of class 6.2 was awarded the Active Reach Project Bicycle Educational Campaign Award. She was one of the students in our school who managed to learn how to ride a bike as part of the project.

A super well done to all involved!

For the 3rd consecutive year, as part of our commitment towards sustainable mobility, through our Green School Travel Plan , as from next Monday 9th October 2023, we are going to restart following a schedule in which students will be encouraged to come to school on foot, by scooter, by bike or by using Public Transport on particular days of the week, unless it is raining.

Kindly follow the Schedule below:

Mondays: Years 1 & 2

Tuesdays: Kindergarten 1

Wednesday – Years 3 & 4

Thursdays – Years 5 & 6

Friday – Kindergarten 2

Students from Year 1 to Year 6, who come to school with a bike or scooter ONLY will enter the school from the back gate leading to the parking area in Triq l-Iskola. The gate will open at 08:25. The same procedure will be adopted during dismissal. Therefore parents/guardians of students who will be using a bike/scooter, are kindly asked to accompany their children in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon from the back gate.

All other children who will not be using a bike or a scooter are to enter through the front gates as usual. Students in Kindergarten who have a scooter or tricycle will use the main entrance as usual.

Students who come to school early for Breakfast Club will use the main entrance in the morning. At dismissal time these children will then use the back gate.

Kindly note that we will reserve a space for the students to park their bikes/scooter in the parking area.

Please do not forget to Label your bicycle/scooter.

We are pleased to share with you that after having analysed the data collected related to the Green School Travel Plan, it has emerged that we have raised from 35% to 63% the amount of students who come to school on foot, by bike or on their scooter. We have proved that together we can be an active agent of change in order to promote sustainable mobility. Well done to all, especially to our EkoSKola committee members for their commitment.

As part of our Green School Travel Plan, today we rewarded those students who came to school by bike, scooter or on foot on a regular basis during this scholastic year. The following students were drawn by lot among the many students who were eligible. The winners were:

Jake Abela P6.1 (His sister received the award in his absence)

Ayzhai Abela P1.1

Liam Cassar K2.3
